Pattern Formation and Bistability in Flow between Counterrotating Cylinders

چکیده
In the Taylor-Couette experiment on fluid flow between counterrotating cylinders, there is a bicritical point where the onset of instabilities to Taylor vortex flow (a steady-state bifurcation) and spiral vortex flow (a Hopf bifurcation) meet. The nonlinear mode interactions near this bicritical point are analyzed, exploiting the role of symmetry in the bifurcation theory. and with emphasis on the relevance to experiments, for a range of radius ratios 0.43 i n i 0.9X. The mechanism of the pattern formation is elucidated, and several new flow patterns and transitions are predicted, including wavy vortices, bistability, hysteresis, and up to 7 quasiperiodic Rows.

Torque scaling in turbulent Taylor-Couette flow with co- and counterrotating cylinders.
We analyze the global transport properties of turbulent Taylor-Couette flow in the strongly turbulent regime for independently rotating outer and inner cylinders, reaching Reynolds numbers of the inner and outer cylinders of Re(i) = 2×10(6) and Re(o) = ±1.4×10(6), respectively. For all Re(i), Re(o), the dimensionless torque G scales as a function of the Taylor number Ta (which is proportional t...

This paper reports the result of an analytical investigation of a steady, incompressible and viscous flow between two eccentric, rotating cylinders at high Reynolds number. A one dimensional case is far from reality because the gap between the cylinders is very small. Further, when their axes are displaced by a small distance, usually caused by bearing loads, two dimensional effects become obvi...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Separation Bubble on Elliptic Cylinders Using Three-equation k-? Turbulence Model
Occurrence of laminar separation bubbles on solid walls of an elliptic cylinder has been simulated using a recently developed transitional model for boundary layer flows. Computational method is based on the solution of the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and the eddy-viscosity concept. Transitional model tries to simulate streamwise fluctuations, induced by freestream turbulen...
متن کاملA Computational Approach to the Flow of Walter’s Liquid B′ through Annulus of Coaxial Porous Circular Cylinders for High Suction Parameter (RESEARCH NOTE)
The present investigation studies the behavior of steady flow of visco-elastic liquid between two porous coaxial circular cylinders, where both the cylinders are rotating with different uniform angular velocities about the common axis. In addition, the inner cylinder has uniform velocity along the axis and the visco-elastic fluid, which is a Walters liquid B′, is allowed to flow in the annulus....
متن کاملInstability mechanisms and transition scenarios of spiral turbulence in Taylor-Couette flow.
Alternating laminar and turbulent helical bands appearing in shear flows between counterrotating cylinders are accurately computed and the near-wall instability phenomena responsible for their generation identified. The computations show that this intermittent regime can only exist within large domains and that its spiral coherence is not dictated by endwall boundary conditions. A supercritical...
